Day 1 Pekoe Trail Stage 10, Dayagama to Horton Plains with words end

Today is physically and mentally demanding, and also logistically challenging. We start at Dayagama, one of the most remote villages in the tea country. Dayagama lies at the far end of the Agarapatana Valley. Very few tourists venture this far – this is a deep tea country experience. Even though the valley lies in the very center of the mountain ranges that form the Sri Lankan tea country, it doesn’t get more remote than this. Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by Montana grassland and cloud forest. This plateau at an altitude of 2,100– 2,300 metres (6,900–7,500 ft) is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. It is also a popular tourist destination. The Horton Plains are the headwaters of three major Sri Lankan rivers, The plains’ vegetation is grasslands interspersed with montane forest, and includes many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer feature as typical mammals, and the park is also an Important Bird Area with many species not only endemic to Sri Lanka but restricted to the Horton Plains. World’s End and Baker’s Falls are among the tourist attractions of the park. End of the trek we drive to our lodge in the tea plantation for the night dinner and the breakfast at the lodge

Day 2 Pekoe Trail Stage 11, Horton Plains to Udaweriya

After the breakfast we start our trek from our lodge, first part we hike in the wide path and road, and we hike to the tea plantation with a panoramic view and hike in the Devil’s Staircase The Pekoe Trail covers only the top section of the Devil’s Staircase, The views are truly breath-taking, all the way down and as you semi-circle around the mountain. On a clear day we can see Udawalawe National Park and beyond we might even see the coastline. we leave one remote valley behind and enter the next. This is the lowest point of today’s walk at an elevation of 1618 meters. We call this valley the ‘hidden valley’ because it lies on the very edge of the tea country and its south-facing. The topography is so dramatic there are very few south-facing tea growing valleys in this area. We keep on hiking up the trail towards a clear pass, through neat terraces of vegetables planted left and right. Small local homes are dotted around the valley. We hike all the way to our lodge Over Night in a remote lodge in the tea plantation Dinner & Breakfast in the lodge

Day 3 Pekoe Trail Stage 12- Udaweriya to Haputale via Thangamale Sanctuary & Forest

After the breakfast in the lodge, we start our trek, walking through various types of forests, not experienced by everyday tourists, we hike through Pine Forest & Natural Forest also in the Eucalyptus Forest, Rain Forest, walk through the Tea Plantations of this Beautiful hill country and see Sri Lanka at its best. And one of the most beautiful Views of north and south can be seen in this walk. Begin your hike early at the historic Loolkandura Estate—Sri Lanka’s very first tea plantation. This stage is one of the longest and most rewarding sections of the Pekoe Trail, taking you deep into the heart of the central highlands.

The path traces the old Dimbula Road, a colonial-era route once used by British planters to transport tea by bullock cart. As you ascend along this historic trail, the scenery shifts into remote and untamed beauty. Towering grasses sway in the breeze, dense forests draped in mist surround you, and breathtaking viewpoints open up across valleys and distant hills.

This is one of the most historically and visually significant stretches of the entire Pekoe Trail—where time feels suspended and the legacy of Ceylon tea echoes in every step.

Your trek concludes near Tawalantenna, where you’ll be transferred to your accommodation for a well-earned rest.

Overnight: Comfortable guesthouse in Gampola or the surrounding countryside.

Day 5 – Train Journey: Gampola to Hatton – Tea Country by Rail

Take a break from hiking and board the train from Gampola to Hatton, considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Marvel at the tea-covered hills, cascading waterfalls, and colonial stations as you ascend through Sri Lanka’s central highlands.

Enjoy a restful afternoon at your accommodation, nestled within the tranquil surroundings of tea country.
Overnight: Bungalow or guesthouse in Hatton.

Day 6 – Pekoe Trail: Watagoda to Kotagala (Trekking Day 5)

Begin today’s hike from Watagoda Train Station, passing forest streams, serene mountain lakes, and ancient banyan trees. As you journey through the Holyrood Estate, you’ll encounter local tea-picking communities and the vast rolling hills of Dimbula, one of the country’s largest tea-growing regions.

Cross several valleys and enjoy ever-changing vistas before reaching Kotagala, where you’ll be transferred back for a well-earned rest.
Overnight: Guesthouse in Kotagala.

Day 7 – Pekoe Trail Stage 7: Kotagala to Norwood (Trekking Day 6)

Today’s 16 km hike begins at Kotagala, ascending toward Chrysler’s Farm Tea Factory. From the high ridges, enjoy breathtaking views of Hatton and Castlereagh Reservoir.

As you descend into Norwood, you’ll pass through rural settlements with a blend of Christian churches and Hindu temples, revealing the area’s multicultural heritage.
Overnight: Stay in Norwood or return to Kotagala guesthouse.

Day 8 – Pekoe Trail: Norwood to Bogawantalawa (Trekking Day 7)

Your trek continues into the famous Golden Valley of Tea, descending from a ridge that separates the Bogawantalawa and Maskeliya Valleys. The area is celebrated for its lush, scenic tea estates and breathtaking views of Adam’s Peak in the distance.

As you make your way through the valleys, you’ll pass churches, temples, and picturesque village roads before arriving in Bogawantalawa.
Overnight: Guesthouse in Hatton or nearby.

Day 9 – Train Journey: Hatton to Ohiya – Highlands Adventure

Rejoin the highland railway for a scenic ride from Hatton to Ohiya, passing through cloud forests and the borders of Horton Plains National Park. The train journey offers uninterrupted views of misty mountains, waterfalls, and deep valleys.

Upon arrival in Ohiya, you’ll transfer to your nearby lodge to prepare for the final stretch of the Pekoe Trail.

Overnight: Lodge in Ohiya.

Day 10 – Horton Plains & Pekoe Trail Stage 12: Ohiya to Haputale (Trekking Day 8)

Start your day with an early morning transfer to the breathtaking Horton Plains National Park, a protected montane plateau renowned for its unique biodiversity and dramatic landscapes. As you trek through this ecological wonderland, you’ll traverse sweeping montane grasslands and ancient cloud forests alive with endemic flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth.

Your hike includes visits to iconic viewpoints such as Mini World’s End and the spectacular World’s End, where sheer cliffs drop sharply into misty valleys far below, offering awe-inspiring panoramic vistas. Along the way, you’ll also stop at the tranquil Baker’s Falls, a picturesque cascade framed by lush vegetation. This circuit through the park takes approximately three hours and is an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photographers alike.

After completing your loop in Horton Plains, you’ll embark on Stage 12 of the Pekoe Trail, beginning from Udaveriya. This stretch descends gently through the peaceful Thangamale Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers where colorful endemic species flit among towering trees. You’ll then pass-through dense stands of eucalyptus and pine forests, immersing yourself in the fresh, fragrant air of Sri Lanka’s highlands.

One of the unique highlights of this stage is a short walk along an old railway track, including a mysterious tunnel carved through the hillside, adding an adventurous touch to your journey.

The day concludes as you arrive in the charming town of Haputale, where you will settle into your cozy guesthouse or bungalow and reflect on the beauty of the highland wilderness you’ve just explored. Overnight: Guesthouse or bungalow in Haputale.

Day 11 – Pekoe Trail Stages 13 & 14: The Ultimate Tea Experience + Cooking Class (Trekking Day 9)

Today’s walk is a highlight 5–6 hours through some of Sri Lanka’s most stunning and least-touristed tea plantations. Walk alongside local tea pluckers, observe their craft, and enjoy a picnic lunch in the hills. The scenery is remarkable: misty valleys, emerald slopes, and smiling locals.

In the afternoon, travel by tuk-tuk to Monisha Villa Homestay, where you’ll be warmly welcomed for a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking experience. Prepare a full dinner guided by Fathima, whose cooking classes are famous on TripAdvisor. End the evening enjoying the meal you helped create.
Overnight: Monisha Villa Homestay, Haputale.

Next, hike to Little Adam’s Peak, a relatively easy climb with epic views that rival its taller namesake.
