Leaving the village, pass the Bogawanthalawa Tea Factory before tackling Jacob’s Ladder, a short but steep zig-zag ascent to a scenic pass. Beyond the pass, the landscape opens dramatically to a Horton Plains-like hidden valley, where locals camp and ascend Haritha Kanda (Green Mountain).
Continue through a dairy farm, where your guide secures the necessary permit, then follow farm tracks and vast open fields before entering forest paths. The trail leads through a small village and descends to Dayagama, where today’s trek concludes. From here, you’ll be transferred to Nuwara Eliya for your overnight stay. Overnight Stay: Hotel or Guesthouse Diyagama
Begin your morning trek from Diyagama, heading towards Horton Plains National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular natural areas. Famed for its mountain moorlands and cloud forests, the park is rich in biodiversity and offers breathtaking scenery at every turn.
Start with a circular walk from the park visitor centre, passing scenic points with evocative names like Chimney Pool and Leg of the Mutton Pool, before arriving at Baker’s Falls. Though only 20m high, the falls are a picture-perfect spot where the Belihul River plunges into a gorge of rhododendrons. Continue to the iconic World’s End, where the plateau drops nearly 1,000 meters, offering panoramic views of the plains below.
After exploring Horton Plains, rejoin the Pekoe Trail at the visitor centre, the highest point of the trail at 2,170m, and trek towards Udaweriya, enjoying a picnic lunch provided by local people. The trail then descends gently before reaching the Devil’s Staircase, the steepest section of the Pekoe Trail. You will tackle the top portion, zig-zagging down the hillside to the small village of Udaweriya. Overnight Stay: Misty Mountain Lodge or Hill Safari Eco Lodge, Udaweriya
Enjoy breakfast with stunning south-facing views over the hills and plains. Today’s trek is mostly downhill along tea trails, forest paths, and a short stretch of rail tracks, passing through eucalyptus and pine forests, remote estate villages, and tea plantations where you can watch or even join workers plucking tea leaves.
The route offers some of the best Hill Country vistas and includes a walk through Tangamale Bird Sanctuary, a peaceful haven for birdwatchers. A highlight is Adisham Hall, a beautifully preserved English-style bungalow from 1931, now part of a Benedictine monastery. Overnight Stay: Haputale
Begin your day at St. Catherine, walking through lush tea plantations and scenic rural paths as you ascend towards Ella Rock, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic viewpoints. The climb rewards you with panoramic vistas of valleys, waterfalls, and the surrounding hill country, making it a highlight of the Pekoe Trail.
After soaking in the views, descend towards the charming town of Ella, passing through more tea estates and village paths along the way. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the hill country and the beauty of rural life before concluding this stage of your trek. Overnight Stay: Hotel or guesthouse in Ella
Today’s trek begins from Ella, one of the most scenic towns in Sri Lanka’s hill country. After breakfast, set out along the Pekoe Trail, passing lush tea estates, small rural hamlets, and stretches of misty forest. The trail gradually moves away from the touristy buzz of Ella, leading you into quiet countryside with stunning views of the surrounding valleys.
As you walk, you’ll see tea pickers at work and pass charming estate villages where you can interact with locals and experience authentic hill country life. The route takes you along winding footpaths, through pine groves, and over old tea trails that have been used for decades.
You’ll also encounter sections of the trail that run parallel to a railway line and enjoy panoramic viewpoints over the Uva region. Along the way, there’s time for a picnic lunch amidst tea gardens or by a scenic viewpoint.
In the latter part of the day, the trail descends towards Haliella, a lesser-visited area surrounded by tea plantations and rolling hills. The peace and remoteness of this section make it a perfect ending to a day filled with natural beauty and cultural encounters. Overnight Stay: Guesthouse or small hotel in Ella
